    Aspen Ridge is a fun sub-alpine SOTA peak southeast of Buena Vista.

    Key Points:

    San Isabel National Forest
    • Accessible during warmer months – late spring, summer, fall
    • Relatively easy climb and activation
    • Beautiful scenery
    • Fine HF site
    • Private land on southeast side of summit ridge
    • Access via a rough 2WD/4WD road
    • ~ 1.8 miles round-trip
    • ~ 450 vertical feet

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive west on Highway 285, and cross Kenosha Pass
    • Continue through South Park to Antero Junction
    • Stay on 285 and descend southwest toward Buena Vista
    • Take FR 307 left, south, near Trout Creek
    • Follow FR 307 for 1.3 miles
    • Turn left on FR 187 and drive toward Castle Rock
    • Continue south on 187 for 5.8 miles to a junction with FR 185
    • Turn south on FR 185 – drive about 6 more miles total
    • Continue south past Elk Mountain Ranch
    • FR 185 climbs and becomes much rougher
    • As the road climbs above 10,200 feet, Aspen Ridge is visible above to the southeast
    • The road levels out just above 10,200 feet elevation
    • While driving south above 10,200 feet, look for a small trail leading southeast – this is the trail you want to hike.
    • Park near this trail, or perhaps a little further south

    The Hike:

    • Hike up the trail through a meadow and then up into aspen forest
    • If you park at the saddle near 10,300 feet, hike northeast toward the ridge south of the summit, and intersect the trail in the aspens

    • Don’t climb the sub-peak south of Aspen Ridge
    • The trail goes up to the saddle south of the peak.
    • It then leads down into private land to the east.
    • The land is fenced and posted from near the ridge-top to the east.

    • Stay on the west side of the fence, and go north along the ridge; or pick a route  lower down, west of the ridge top, and continue toward the summit.
    • Pass a large pile of stones marking a property corner and the county boundary.
    • The entire ridge top is public land north of the stone pile.
    • Continue north to the actual peak.

    Additional Details:

    This trip would be superb during aspen-gold season! Huge aspen groves cover the west side of the summit, as well as several miles all along the road.

    The prominent summit is spectacular, with awesome views of the high Sawatch Range and Collegiate Peaks 14-ers about 15 miles to the west.

    Mount Antero isn’t very far away.

    The view northeast includes South Park and various mountains to the east.

    Pikes Peak stands 51 miles away.

    The ridge runs almost level for a long way – the SOTA Activation Zone may be ¼ mile long. Many convenient trees are available along the top, so it’s easy to run a wire north-south right on the crest. Some protection from wind is provided by the ridge-top, as well as the vegetation.

    Aspen Ridge has a low HF noise level – almost no development is nearby. HF signals can take off at a low angle, because various higher summits are distant. This is a nearly ideal summit for HF SOTA.

    My results were good:

    7 MHz CW 21 contacts
    10 MHz CW 17 contacts
    18 MHz CW 11 contacts

    (49 total)

    John N0TA was on simultaneously, and he also did well:

    14 MHz CW 26 contacts
    7 MHz CW 10 contacts

    (36 total)

    We were both running 5 watts. The solar flux was 77, and the geomagnetic field was relatively quiet.

    I observed an amazing phenomenon while operating CW on 18 MHz. While calling CQ, I heard another station sending weakly on my exact frequency. Concerned about possible QRM, I stopped sending to listen. Instantly the other station also stopped – I heard nothing. I resumed sending CQ’s again, and the QRM resumed immediately. After a couple more repeats of this apparent interference, I sent a few dits, and I heard something come back. Soon it was apparent what was going on…Every time I sent, there was an apparent echo. I also could hear signals between my own dits and dahs.

    I was hearing my own signals, propagating all the way around the world! The QSK in my ATS-3B rig is fast enough to hear part of what went around the long path.

    Just when I realized I was hearing my own 5 watt signals traveling close to 25,000 miles, not QRM, other stations began calling me. I made 11 contacts on 17M, including ZL1BYZ, John, in New Zealand. Signals were quite strong on 17M – John was 579, I was 419; N1EU was 599, W4DOW was 599, etc.

    I also heard beautiful echoes on many of the 17M signals! They had long path components, and it was a real thrill to hear the band so incredibly alive! Some of the echoes were strong enough to make the signals hard to copy. This wasn’t the first time I’ve heard echoes on strong signals, but I’d never heard my own signals before.

    The low noise and excellent propagation from the summit of Aspen Ridge facilitated hearing the echoes. Unfortunately, such wonders may be rare as we descend into what remains of the current solar cycle.

    Because the Aspen Ridge looks down into parts of the Arkansas Valley and South Park, VHF/UHF contacts may be made with stations in these areas. Many 2M contacts have been made from Aspen Ridge.

    Mount Sherman is a rocky, high, alpine summit in a historic mining area about 10 miles west of Fairplay, Colorado.

    • High altitude hike
    • Very popular 14-er climb
    • Rocky trail goes all the way to the top
    • Spectacular alpine scenery
    • Excellent HF site
    • 4.7 miles round-trip
    • ~2000 vertical feet total

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive west on Highway 285, and cross Kenosha Pass
    • Continue west on Highway 285 to Fairplay
    • Drive south from Fairplay about one mile
    • Just past the turn-off for Highway 9, Highway 285 goes up a little hill
    • Turn west at the top of the hill on County Road 18, the Four Mile Creek Road
    • This unpaved road is OK for several miles, but it gets worse as it heads up into the mountains. 4WD is not required, but many parts of the road are rocky and rough.
    • Follow CR 18 up scenic, historic Four Mile Creek, past old mines and mills.

    • The last mile or so is rough and steep. There are many rocks too large for low-clearance vehicles. Some vehicles with medium clearance may make it OK, if driven carefully.

    • Parking lower along the road is possible – some parking is available about one mile down, near 11,600 feet.
    • The road ends at a gate near an old mine; there’s a large parking area.
    • This is the Fourmile Creek Trailhead, also called the Mount Sherman Trailhead.

    • This trailhead is at 12,200 feet
    • It’s about 12 miles from Highway 285 to the trailhead.
    • This is a very popular trailhead, because Mount Sherman is one of the most-climbed 14-ers.

    The Hike:

    • Because of the high altitude, this trip is recommended only for experienced climbers with a high level of physical fitness.
    • Google Maps show none of the trails near Mount Sherman
    • GPS is very useful in this area
    • The hike is relatively simple, but it isn’t marked well with signs, etc.
    • Hike up the road past the gate, and stay on the mine road as it ascends mostly north, up past various old mines and historic structures, into a high basin at about 12,900 feet.

    • A well-used foot trail leads west from the basin at 12,900 feet up to the saddle at about 13,125 feet. There are a few cairns marking the correct route.
    • At the saddle, Mount Sherman stands high to the northeast; Mount Sheridan stands less high to the southwest.
    • Follow the trail northeast up the moderate ridge

    • Continue climbing up past 13,500 feet, as the ridge narrows and becomes steeper and rougher.
    • At 14,000 feet the trail reaches the long, flat summit ridge.

    • The actual summit is near the middle of the ridge.
    • Several rock piles and wind shelters are available.

    Additional Details:

    Unless the wind is extreme, or people are already there, a wind shelter may be a good place to set up radio gear. I had some wind, so I guyed my pole to rocks near a convenient shelter north of the summit. It was easy to run the wire along the ridge and set up my gear in the shelter.

    Mount Sherman is a perfect HF summit. It falls away in all directions, and there are no higher peaks nearby to affect skip signals. There’s little development with AC power nearby, and the RF noise level is very low. I had no problem making 43 CW contacts on three HF bands!

    Sherman is an OK VHF/UHF peak, because it looks out across most of South Park, as well as into parts of the Arkansas Valley. The SOTA page shows many 2M contacts.

    The summit offers great views of numerous peaks and most of South Park. The immediate area near the mountain is impressive – White Ridge extends far out to the east – it’s very bright. Pikes Peak stands alone across South Park, 66 miles to the southeast.

    Other high peaks stand for miles along the top of the Mosquito Range to the north. Mount Sheridan is only about 1.3 mile southwest, and the ridge continues 1.6 miles south to Horseshoe Mountain.

    The ridge stays high for many more miles. It seems like everything in sight is over 4000M! The Sawatch Range isn’t far away, with numerous higher peaks to the west. . Dozens of SOTA peaks are visible.

    Mount Sheridan W0C/SR-070 offers a reasonable dual activation nearby. Activating Sheridan adds about 2 miles and 650 vertical feet to the trip up Sherman. I activated both peaks, but I started with Sheridan. It was a long day, but so nice that there was almost nothing to worry about.

    I saw only a few people on Sherman, mostly because my visit was late in the season. It was perfect weather, with little wind, and sunny all day. It’s incredible to be in such high places with ideal conditions! It was nice to contact so many chasers with my tiny radio!

    Mount Sherman is a SOTA Classic for all the reasons detailed above, and Mount Sherman and Sheridan are a SOTA Classic Dual Activation!

    North Tarryall Peak is a classic alpine SOTA peak in the Tarryall Mountains east of South Park.

    Pike National Forest
    • Somewhat challenging off-trail climb to the summit
    • Spectacular scenery
    • Exciting alpine summit
    • Superb radio site
    • ~ 3.5 miles round-trip
    • ~ 1250 vertical feet

    ** SOTA Classic **

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive west on Highway 285 and cross Kenosha Pass
    • About 2 miles beyond the Pass, turn left, south, on CR 56, the Lost Park Road
    • This unpaved road is rocky and rough, but it’s normally a 2WD road, and high clearance is not required
    • Follow CR 56 about 13.3 miles up to Lost Pass at 10,680 feet
    • Park at the Pass

    ** Note that CR 56 may be closed seasonally – check with the  USFS **

    The Hike and the Climb:

    • A fence runs up the hill just south of the Pass
    • Hike southwest along the fence through the woods
    • Head west near the top of the hill, and go through open forest to a bench at about 11,000 feet
    • The bench is a large marsh
    • Follow a game trail southwest across the southeast side of the bench
    • Enter the forest at about 11,100 feet
    • Follow game trails south-southwest up the steep slope toward the summit
    • At about 11,650 feet, continue hiking up the rocky northeast ridge of the mountain
    • Continue on the ridge to the summit area at 11,800 feet
    • The rocky summit is visible to the southwest across a large alpine meadow
    • An impressive old triangulation station stands intact on the rocky peak
    • A convenient path leads up a gully to the summit

    Additional Details:

    The ascent route described above is direct and efficient. Since this way is up the northeast side of the mountain, it might not be so nice if there’s snow in the woods. Other possible routes start by driving (or hiking) south on FR-446 for a mile or two. Some old closed logging roads lead up roughly west from FR-446 and provide partial access to the upper part of the mountain. These roads are visible in the Google satellite images.

    Regardless of the route you choose, GPS navigation is a good idea up there, because the forest is so thick that the summit’s often hidden from view. A good map and a compass also can keep you on course.

    The huge activation zone definitely includes a broad sub-peak, with nice trees and shelter from wind, about 500 feet north of the triangulation station. Please see the enlarged topo map of the summit. Activating from the exposed triangulation station is also possible, but there’s little shelter from wind, and no trees are available.

    North Tarryall Peak is a perfect HF site. Far from development, the noise level is very low. The prominent summit falls away quickly in all directions. No nearby mountains significantly block HF skip signals.

    This mountain should be useful for VHF/UHF communication as well. It’s high enough to have coverage across South Park to the Divide and the Collegiate Peaks.

    North Tarryall Peak sits on the long, high ridge-top of the Tarryall Mountains. The open views from the cliffy summit are spectacular. Topaz Mountain W0C/SP-062 stands 2.4 miles to the southeast.

    Pikes Peak is visible far to the south, beyond Topaz Mountain, Bison Peak, and McCurdy Mountain.

    Most of South Park spreads out far below. Other mountain ranges are easy to see far in the distance.

    Peak X (W0C/FR-022) and Peak Y (W0C/SP-052) stand less than 4 miles north in the Kenosha Mountains:

    In the southeast the eastern plains are visible, behind Lost Park and various summits in the Lost Creek Wilderness.

    North Tarryall can be combined with other nearby SOTA peaks for a dual activation:

    W0C/SP-062 Topaz Mountain 2.4 miles southeast
    W0C/SP-075 11060 4.2 miles east
    W0C/SP-068 11423 6.2 miles southeast

    North Tarryall Peak is a SOTA Classic!

    • Spectacular rocky alpine summit

    Burntop is a surprisingly fun sub-alpine SOTA peak in the northern Puma Hills, on the east side of South Park. The west side of the mountain and the summit ridge were burned by a forest fire many years ago.

    Key Points:

    Pike National Forest
    • Burned area
    • Good unmarked trail part of the way
    • Relatively short, steep climb
    • Great views of South Park and beyond
    • Fine HF site
    • ~ 2.7 miles round-trip
    • ~ 1570 vertical feet

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive down 285, across Kenosha Pass, to Jefferson
    • Turn south on Highway 77 and go about XX miles to Tarryall Reservoir
    • Just past Tarryall Reservoir, turn right, west, on CR 23
    • CR 23 is a bumpy 2WD dirt road
    • Drive about 1.5 mile to a split in the road
    • Turn left, south, on FR 144 into Packer Gulch
    • FR 144 is a good 2WD dirt road if dry

    • Drive south on FR-144 about 3.5 miles
    • Look for Burntop on the left, east, side – the burn scar is obvious
    • A left-right dog-leg in the road precedes the “trailhead” at 9520 feet
    • A closed forest road will be visible at the second bend of the dog-leg, directly below Burntop – look for a fiberglass USFS marker
    • Park here

    The Climb:

    • Hike up the closed road about 0.6 mile, first through a meadow, and then into the aspens – the road/trail gradually disappears.

    • Climb left toward an obvious gully
    • Near 9900 feet, cross the steep gully below the burned area, and start hiking up the steep burn scar
    • Small game trails lead up through the dead trees and bushes

    • Stay north of the gully, and hike ENE up to the ridge-top

    • Turn north at the ridge-top
    • Hike along the ridge through an open burned area, all the way to the top

    • There are several large rock outcrops within the Activation Zone
    • The summit has a jar with a register
    • Google maps are OK for this area
    • The Google satellite image is superb – it shows the dog-leg in the road, the trailhead, the closed road as far as it goes, the steep gully, the burn scar, and the summit area.

    Additional Details:

    The closed road provides a good route to this accessible SOTA peak. It’s “secret”, because it’s not shown on the Pike National Forest map, nor does it have a marked “trailhead”. It has no number, and its only marking is that it’s closed to motor vehicles. This old trail leads to the best place to cross the gully, in order to climb the burn scar.

    The climb from the upper end of the road to the ridge-top south of the summit is only about 0.4 miles, but the vertical gain is 900 feet. The final ascent along the ridge is about 0.3 miles, with a vertical gain of about 280 feet. It’s sad that the fire burned up the mountain, but the open views near the top create an intense experience.

    The pointed summit is small but spectacular. It’s perched at the craggy top of a very steep slope, and the views will take your breath away. A small cairn with a jar marks the peak.

    The day I was there, it was a windy day, so I set up my radio gear in a sunny spot southeast of the peak. A few dead and live trees are available to support a pole or a wire.

    I found a card from first-activator Steve WG0AT in the jar on the summit! What a pleasant surprise!

    Burntop is almost an ideal SOTA peak. It’s prominent in all directions, and it’s radio quiet, with no development around the mountain. No higher mountains block HF skip signals significantly. The peak is probably a poor VHF/UHF site, with coverage limited to the northern part of South Park.

    This peak can be combined with nearby Puma Peak W0C/SP-065 for a dual activation.

    Dispersed camping is allowed in Packer Gulch – but it’s really busy there on nice weekends.

    Be aware of hunters in the fall – wear bright orange.

    Puma Peak is an interesting sub-alpine SOTA peak in the northern Puma Hills, on the east side of South Park.  It’s the highest summit in the Puma Hills.

    Key Points:

    Pike National Forest
    • Jeep road most of the way
    • Relatively short off-trail climb to peak
    • Prominent summit
    • Fine HF site
    • ~ 7.5 miles round-trip, hiking from 9770 feet
    • ~ 1800 vertical feet, hiking from 9770 feet

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive down 285, across Kenosha Pass, to Jefferson
    • Turn south on Highway 77 and go about 16 miles to Tarryall Reservoir
    • Just south of Tarryall Reservoir, turn right, west, on CR 23
    • CR 23 is a bumpy 2WD dirt road
    • Drive about 1.5 miles to a split in the road
    • Turn left, south, on marked Packer Gulch Road FR-144
    • FR-144 is a good 2WD dirt road up the valley if dry
    • Drive south on FR-144 about 4 miles


    • The road ascends the drainage and then makes a big turn to the right as it enters thick forest
    • Very soon there’s a junction with FR-237
    • This is a good place to park, unless you have a high-clearance vehicle

    The Climb:

    • It’s possible to drive up this road to a saddle at 11,040 feet, provided conditions are good
    • The road doesn’t require 4WD or high clearance for the first couple of miles, but it’s very narrow, and it gets considerable use from ATV’s, Jeeps, and trail-bikes
    • The road gets rougher above about 10,000 feet, with large rocks in a few spots

    • There was a tree blocking the road about a mile below the end when I was there – some 4WD drivers were able to go up and around it – steep, serious detour!
    • The road isn’t steep, so it’s an easy hike – but it’s so gentle that it’s inefficient
    • This would be an ideal MTB or motorbike climb – but listen for motor vehicles
    • From the saddle at 11,040 feet, hike southwest, up through the forest, on a small, steep path
    • The path is less distinct toward the top – just follow the ridge up through the bristlecone pines and a little deadfall


    • After about 0.3 mile and over 500 vertical feet, the rocky summit appears

    Additional Details:

    Puma Peak is heavily forested with bristlecone pine trees. Views across South Park are spectacular but limited by the trees. You can look down at Eagle Rock W0C/SP-113 and Observatory Rock W0C/SP-102 far below, and much of South Park and other mountains far to the west.

    I set up my radio gear just east of the summit, because of rocks and deadfall on the peak. There’s plenty of room to set up among the trees.

    Puma Peak is a fine SOTA peak. It’s prominent in all directions, and no higher mountains block HF skip signals significantly. The site has very low noise – there’s no development near the mountain. The peak is probably an OK VHF/UHF site, with coverage limited to the northern part of South Park.

    This peak can be combined with nearby Burntop W0C/SP-074 for a dual activation.

    Which Summit is the Peak?

    Puma Peak has a sister summit about ¼ mile along the ridge to the southwest. This peak’s elevation is similar to that of the designated SOTA peak. The SOTA location of Puma Peak on Google Maps agrees with the location of the red balloon summit shown by Lists of John – both show the northeastern peak as the summit. This location is 39.1572, -105.5815. The SOTA elevation is given as 3527m, or 11570 ft.

    The problem is that the USGS topography on the 7.5 minute quadrangle (Farnum Peak quad) clearly shows the southwestern peak at 11570 feet and the northeastern peak at 11550 feet; the printed numerical elevations for both peaks agree with the contour line data. I looked at the digital version of Farnum Peak quad on the USGS site, and the mapped topography indicates that the southwest summit is the peak. It isn’t clear why this discrepancy exists.

    When I climbed the mountain, I first hiked out to the southwestern summit. I ran my GPS track out and back, and I recorded waypoints on both summits and the saddle. My GPS has a barometric altimeter which tends to stabilize the GPS altitude measurements. The various altitude measurements along the track strongly suggest – but don’t confirm – that the northeast peak is the real SOTA peak.

    Without more accurate instruments, there’s no way to verify which summit is higher. In their book “Colorado’s Lost Creek Wilderness”, Gerry and Jennifer Roach say that they made careful checks with a hand level and determined that the northeast summit is the real peak.  That’s pretty solid.

    Unfortunately the saddle between the peaks appears to be too low for both peaks to share the Activation Zone – my GPS data shows the saddle almost 100 feet below the northeast peak. The USGS map has it even lower.

    After I ran my GPS track out to the southwestern sub-peak and back, I did my activation on the northeastern summit.

    Schoolmarm Mountain is a fun sub-alpine SOTA peak in the west-central Puma Hills, on the east side of South Park.

    Key Points:

    Pike National Forest
    • Closed logging road ascends most of the way
    • Relatively short off-trail climb to peak
    • Prominent summit
    • Fine HF site
    • 2.6 miles round-trip
    • 1200 vertical feet

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive west on Highway 285, across Kenosha Pass, to Jefferson
    • Turn south on Highway 77, and go about 16 miles to Tarryall Reservoir
    • Just past Tarryall Reservoir, turn right, west, on CR 23
    • CR 23 is mostly a pretty good 2WD dirt road, with some bumpy sections and washboarding
    • A detailed map is essential for the rest of the drive. Google maps doesn’t include some of the relevant forest roads and other details.
    • The Pike National Forest map is very useful
    • Follow CR 23 generally west several miles, around several bends, and past a few splits, until it eventually leads south around the western base of the Puma Hills. This road is called Turner Gulch Road, CR 23, even though it’s slightly west of the actual Turner Gulch Road FR-145.  Don’t drive into Packer Gulch:

    • Drive south on CR 23 for about 6 miles from the fork where FR-146 goes northwest toward Eagle Rock, etc.
    • Turn left, east, on marked FR-237
    FR-237 is an OK, lumpy, narrow 2WD road if it’s dry – at least medium clearance is needed for this part of the trip; there are humps.
    • Drive up FR-237 about one mile from CR 23 to a fork.
    • At the fork go right, southeast, on FR-237A, into the upper part of Turner Gulch


    • Ascend about ½ mile up FR-237A to the gated end of the road
    • Park here – this is the “trailhead”, but it’s not so marked.

    *** CR 23 can also be accessed easily from Highway 24 ***

    The Climb:

    • Hike up the closed road behind the gate
    • Not far up from the gate at the trailhead there’s a fork, and a road leads left, up a hill, and off to the east
    • Stay on the road leading south up Turner Gulch
    • Unfortunately for hikers, the USFS wants this road permanently closed to vehicles, so they have spread hundreds of old tree trunks across the road for at least ¼ mile up.

    • In some parts it’s easier to hike along the road than on it.
    • Eventually the route is mostly clear of obstacles, and hiking becomes more efficient


    • The road ends at a large cleared area.
    • Continue climbing up the hill on game trails, through relatively open sub-alpine forest, to a saddle at 11,000 feet.
    • Hike steeply southwest from the saddle for about ¼ mile and 330 vertical feet to the summit of Schoolmarm Mountain.  Most of the route is along an old trail up the partly-forested ridge.

    • An intact triangulation station from 1953 stands on the rocky peak
    • The related USCGS Benchmark is beneath the wooden station

    A little rain shower started when I reached the top, and I found some shelter under a tree. I set up my radio gear slightly southeast of the peak. There’s plenty of room to set up near the rocky summit. You could even set up right by the triangulation station – just be careful of the steel guy wires!

    The views from the actual summit are somewhat limited by the bristlecone pines, but what you can see is still awesome – South Park, the Collegiate Peaks, the Divide, etc. There’s a special rocky spot just south of the summit with excellent views.

    Schoolmarm is a fine SOTA peak. It’s prominent in all directions, and no higher mountains block HF skip signals significantly. The site has very low noise – there’s no development on the mountain. The peak is probably an OK VHF/UHF site, with coverage limited to areas of South Park.

    This mountain can be combined with several nearby SOTA peaks for a dual activation:

    Lake Park Peak is a challenging sub-alpine SOTA peak in the Tarryall Mountains east of South Park.

    Key Points:

    Pike National Forest
    Lost Creek Wilderness Area
    • Good trail most of the way
    • Challenging off-trail climb to the summit
    • Great scenery
    • Excellent Radio site
    • ~ 12.5 miles round-trip
    • ~ 3000 vertical feet

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive Highway 285 west from Denver, cross Kenosha Pass, and continue to Jefferson
    • Turn south on Highway 77 and go about 16 miles to Tarryall Reservoir
    • Continue south on 77 for about 10.7 miles to the trailhead at Spruce Grove Campground
    • This campground is about a mile south of Tarryall Ranch
    • Look for a sign for the USFS Spruce Grove Campground on the east side
    • Park outside the campground, away from the gate
    • There is no charge to park

    The Hike and Climb:

    • Google Maps is inadequate for hiking in this area – trails are missing
    • The Trails Illustrated/National Geographic maps are fine
    • GPS is useful and recommended
    • Walk from the trailhead down into the campground, and head slightly east and down to Tarryall Creek
    • Cross the creek on a large footbridge
    • Immediately head left, upstream, on trail Lizard Rock Trail 658
    • The route passes through a tunnel under a large boulder


    • Continue north through open meadows and up a small canyon on Trail 658


    • Where the trail comes to a T-junction, turn right, east on Trail 630 toward Hankins Pass. The trail signs were missing or damaged when I was there.
    • Follow the trail up more than a mile to Hankins Pass.


    • At the Pass, turn left, north, and follow marked Trail 639 as it climbs switchbacks up toward Lake Park.
    • Near 10,900 feet the trail reaches an obvious saddle – Lake Park is visible below
    • Head right, off the trail to the east, and climb toward the ridge southwest of Lake Park Peak
    • Near the top of the ridge, at about 11,100 feet, contour around to the east, to the south side of Lake Park Peak


    • Climb up through forest and rocks until you see the summit, and then head up the knobby Pikes Peak granite to the top.
    • This route avoids rock climbing and scrambling along the craggy southwest ridge
    • Note that the western summit is slightly higher than the steep eastern sub-peak, which stands about 500 feet away

    In the image above, look carefully at lower right for the white wire antenna running all the way up to the rock at upper left.

    Additional Details:

    The off-trail part of this ascent is harder than it looks on the map, and it may take longer than you expect! I climbed via the southwest ridge, which involves route-finding and some class-3 moves in several spots. The orange granite is good rock, and the ridge up to the summits is interesting, with many weird rock formations. Lake Park Peak is rarely visited, but it’s visually fascinating.

    The actual summit is all granite, and setting up a pole there may be difficult. I moved down to the east and tied my pole to a pine tree; I ran the wire up to the ridge near the summit. I had shelter from the wind, warm sun, and an excellent spot to operate from.

    Lake Park Peak is a perfect HF site. Miles from any development, the noise level is very low. The prominent summit falls away quickly in all directions. No nearby mountains cause significant blockage of HF skip signals.

    My SOTA First Activation was fun. I made 26 CW contacts on 3 HF bands.

    The peak may be a useful VHF/UHF site as well. It’s high enough to see parts of the Eastern Plains, Pikes Peak, and across South Park to the Collegiate Peaks.

    Peak 10462 is a fun sub-alpine SOTA peak in the Puma Hills, on the east side of South Park.

    Pike National Forest
    • Moderate climb and activation
    • Nice scenery
    • Fine HF site
    • Secret closed road most of the way
    • ~ 4.25 miles round-trip
    • ~ 1750 vertical feet

    Driving access:

    • Drive down 285, cross Kenosha Pass, and continue to Jefferson
    • Turn south on Highway 77 and drive about 16 miles to Tarryall Reservoir
    • Continue south on Highway 77 for 6.8 miles south of the Reservoir
    • Turn right, west, on tiny FR 266
    • Go SE only about 0.15 mile on this rough 2WD road
    • Park near 8800 feet
    • Google Maps are incorrect/inadequate for this area

    The climb:

    • Hike up a marked, closed old road/trail as it climbs along Gooseberry Creek
    • Continue southwest about 1.5 miles to the end of the road near 10,000 feet
    • Follow game trails up south to a saddle at 10,300 feet, east of 10462
    • Hike west up the ridge to the summit

    Additional Details:

    The closed road provides a superb access to this pleasant SOTA peak. It’s “secret”, because it’s not shown on the Pike National Forest map, nor does it have a marked “trailhead”. It has no posted number, and its only marking is that it’s closed to motor vehicles. There’s convenient parking where the closed road forks off FR 266.

    The old road climbs steeply and efficiently up the Gooseberry Creek drainage, through conifers and aspen groves, to the end at about 10,000 feet. Most of the road is visible on the Google satellite images at high magnification – that’s how I found it!

    The climb from the end of the road to the saddle near the summit is only about ¼ mile. There are some subtle game trails leading up to the saddle between 10462 and its eastern sub-peak. The last 150 vertical feet up to the peak is a short, pleasant hike up the east ridge of 10462.

    The pointed summit is small but nice; a few rocks holding a register in a jar mark the peak.  The jar contains the signature of famous Colorado Summitpost author Sarah Simon!  Here’s her report on UN 10462.  She likes 10462 as much as I do.

    A small prospect hole has been dug into the rocks on the northeast corner of the top. The day I was there, it was a windy day, so I set up in a sunny spot southeast of the peak.

    10462 is an almost ideal SOTA peak. It’s prominent in all directions, and no close peaks block HF propagation significantly. Little development is nearby, and the noise level is very low. Views are limited by trees, but the vista east into the Lost Creek Wilderness is impressive.

    Pikes Peak stands far to the southeast, to the right of the eastern sub-peak.

    It’s possible that 10462 is accessible from Weber Park, south of the peak. Most of that area is private land, and I have no information about access to the National Forest land leading up to 10462 from the south side.

    Peak 10462 could easily be combined with another SOTA peak for a dual activation – possibilities include:

    Geology Comments:

    The summit hill of 10462 has an interesting mix of ancient pre-Cambrain rocks.

    On the south side, massive orange granite forms large rounded boulders in a continuous exposure.

    On the north side, dark gray gneiss shows an equally massive and continuous exposure right along-side the granite.

    The route to the top from the saddle runs right up along the contact between the two strikingly different rocks; it’s hard to miss this conjunction of these two very different ancient rock types.

    Spinney Mountain is a prominent, fun summit in South Park.

    Key Points:

    Spinney Mountain State Park
    • No marked trail
    • Some route finding and navigation
    • Excellent HF site
    • Incredible views of South Park
    • No access in winter
    • ~ 8700 feet trailhead elevation
    • ~ 825 vertical feet to the summit
    • ~ 1.8 miles round trip

    Spinney Mountain State Park is in South Park, about 15 miles west of Lake George, and about 10 miles southeast of Hartsel. The main feature of the Park is the large reservoir, which stores water from the South Platte River, and offers high-quality fishing.

    Driving Directions:

    • Drive to South Park
    • From Colorado Springs via Highway 24, or from Denver via Highway 285
    • Continue to the junction of Highway 24 and CR 23, about 4.4 miles west of Wilkerson Pass, and 10.5 miles east of Hartsel
    • Drive south on CR 23 for 2.8 miles
    • Turn right on Road 59, and drive 1.1 miles northwest
    • Turn left, south, into the State Park
    • Buy a pass at the entrance – a State Park pass is required to use this park.
    • Follow the gravel road 2.2 miles south along the east side of the lake.

    It’s important to park at the last small parking spot near the lake, just north of the large parking area at the southern boat ramp. Some repeat driving on the one-way roads may be needed to figure out which parking spot is correct – please read the next part carefully:

    A large fence runs along the base of Spinney Mountain, about 100 to 200 yards east of the road. This fence is posted only with signs that prohibit hunting. However, just in the area near the dam, near the southeast corner of the lake, there’s additional posting, with no access to the land east of the road. If you go down there and then head back north, along the exit road toward the entrance area, look carefully at the fence to spot a stile. This stile allows passage through the fence for some game animals, so they’re not prevented from migrating. The stile is located in a draw about 200 yards east of the road. It’s important to locate this stile; then park in the parking area near the lake and west of this stile. Note that parking is prohibited along the roads!

    A game trail leads east from the parking area and most of the way to the stile. In 2015 the stile was not posted with any signs, but there was a game camera pointing east, positioned to photograph animals crossing the stile. In 2016 there were still no signs, but the camera was not there. Cross through the fence at the stile, and hike east and up toward the summit. Please don’t try to cross the fence anywhere except at the stile.

    There are several ways to ascend Spinney Mountain – I chose to hike up the ridge northwest of the summit; the ridges seem easier than the gullies. Several good game trails are available.

    From the summit ridge, climb to the barren top of the north summit. Remains of a survey station lie near a large pile of rocks. There’s a jar with climbers’ names on a paper pad. Spinney Mountain has awesome views of South Park and numerous alpine peaks around this high basin.

    The activation zone along the ridge has few trees, so plan on putting up a pole and guying it to the rocks. It can be windy, but it’s easy to find shelter behind the summit. Be careful of the cactus plants growing on the ground, as well as the wires used to guy the old survey station.

    Spinney Mountain is very prominent in all directions; activating it is like being on an 800 foot tower! Little development is nearby, and the HF noise level is low; this is a fine HF site. VHF/UHF coverage is limited mostly to South Park. My HF activations up there were fun:

    On Nov 9, 2015, I logged 42 CW contacts on 7, 10, 14, 18, and 21 MHz.

    On Oct 16, 2016, I logged 42 CW contacts on 10 and 14 MHz, including a summit-to-summit contact with K6HPX/P on W7A/CS-038, and a DX contact with EA2IF in Spain.

    Note that the State Park closes for the winter – usually this occurs in early November. Check to be sure it’s open before heading out there. In the fall be cautious of possible hunters in the land east of the Park. I saw no evidence of hunting when I was there on Nov 9, but I saw many deer. Please read and follow the park rules.

    It’s possible to combine an activation of Spinney Mountain with nearby Sulphur Mountain W0C/SP-121 about three miles to the north, as well as with many other SOTA summits in South Park.

    South Twin Cone Peak is a prominent alpine summit in the Lost Creek Wilderness, about 4 miles east of Kenosha Pass.

    Key points:

    • Pleasant alpine peak
    • Seldom climbed
    • No trail to the top
    • Navigation and route-finding required
    • Access via dirt road from Kenosha Pass
    • Road requires moderately high clearance vehicle
    • Accessible in summer and fall
    • Fine HF site
    • ~11.4 miles round-trip to the summit via my route
    • ~ 2000 feet total vertical gain
    • With a 4WD high-clearance vehicle, the hiking distance can be reduced

    Driving Directions:

    First drive to Kenosha Pass via Highway 285. Turn east onto Forest Road 126 at the Pass. FR 126 begins as an easy 2WD dirt road.

    Follow the road into the Kenosha Creek drainage and continue upstream. The road crosses a ford in the creek – this is a big pile of rocks. Only cars with adequate clearance – at least 5 inches – can drive over these rocks without possible damage. Some of the land in the valley along the road is private, but it’s OK to pass through to the National Forest.

    About three miles from Highway 285, at 10,400 feet, FR 126 leaves the creek and heads up a series of steep switchbacks. The road quickly gets steeper and rockier. Depending on your vehicle, you might be wise to park near the first switchback, before the road gets more serious – I did this. There are more large rocks as the road ascends, but a careful driver should be able to drive a high-clearance vehicle higher than I did, even without 4WD.

    Either drive or hike up the switchbacks as the road climbs the southwest side of North Twin Cone Peak. Continue along the rocky 4WD road toward North Twin Cone. There are several nice campsites along this road.

    After climbing above 11,300 feet, the road descends east about 200 vertical feet for about 2/3 mile into the upper Kenosha Creek drainage, south of North Twin Cone and west of South Twin Cone.

    From the obvious turn-around and parking spot, FR-126 ascends a long, steep, rocky 4WD hill.

    Only experienced drivers with very-high-clearance vehicles should attempt to drive up the rough trail toward North Twin Cone Peak. It’s more practical to park and hike up!

    Hiking Directions:

    To reach South Twin Cone, leave the jeep trail south of North Twin Cone at about 11,800 feet, and hike east across the tundra. There’s no marked route, but there are hints of a path. Heading east too soon leads into a big willow swamp.

    It’s not necessary to climb all the way east, up to the ridge between North and South Twin Cones. The upper part of the willows area is sparse, and animal paths lead through the thickets. The best route to South Twin Cone may depend on the season and conditions.

    It might be possible to short-cut east from the jeep road at 11,200 feet and climb up the forested southwest ridge of South Twin Cone, but I don’t know if this is a practical route. I chose to hike via the North Twin Cone road, because it’s mostly easy and open all the way.

    Above about 11,600 feet the area is mostly alpine meadows filled with rocks and wildflowers. The upper part of South Twin Cone is an easy climb over tundra and large rocks. The large, rounded summit slopes gently to the east – the activation zone is spacious. Some shelter from wind is provided by large rocks and the summit itself. The views are spectacular. Alpine terrain extends southeast for miles into the wilderness.

    Details:

    South Twin Cone is a fine HF radio site. There’s little blockage of HF signals in any direction, and the ground slopes down at a nice angle. The HF noise level is very low – there’s almost no development for miles. This high site probably is not a very good VHF/UHF site; but it may have limited coverage of the Front Range foothills, parts of the eastern Plains, some of the Denver Metro area, and areas to the southeast. Coverage of South Park is likely good.

    There’s a small solar-powered radio facility on North Twin Cone. I experienced no HF noise from this site.

    I made 23 HF contacts on four bands during my SOTA activation of South Twin Cone. It was fun to operate from this wonderful high spot on a sunny, dry day. I saw no one after I left my car. It’s surprising how many nice, accessible mountains are seldom visited!

    In bad weather, South Twin Cone may experience lightning storms, high winds, hail, and snow; this mountain is best climbed in dry, stable weather. The descent route is high and exposed to the weather for a long distance.

    I started the hike at 10:22 AM from where I parked on the road at 10,400 feet, and I reached the summit at 12:58 PM. On a day with storms this would have been way too late for a SOTA activation! Because of the drive and the length of the hike, South Twin Cone may require a very early start if storms are likely. It will be a long day.

    While there are other SOTA peaks in the area of South Twin Cone, it would be difficult to do a dual activation with another summit. Possibilities include:

    W0C/SP-070 11356 6 miles NW, off Hall Valley Road
    W0C/FR-062 Mount Bailey 10 miles east, off 285 near Bailey

    Camping nearby might make it practical to activate multiple summits in the area. Numerous forest campgrounds and campsites are within a few miles of Kenosha Pass.

    South Twin Cone is a fine SOTA peak with reasonable access. The low-noise alpine summit and wildflower-meadows are really nice! The only reason it’s not quite a “SOTA Classic” is that the long hike runs for miles along a jeep road. I’m planning to come back!
