{"id":6841,"date":"2017-01-31T21:32:46","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T04:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/?p=6841"},"modified":"2017-01-31T21:32:46","modified_gmt":"2017-02-01T04:32:46","slug":"w0csc065-9852-3003-9852-ft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/sota-trip-report\/w0csc065-9852-3003-9852-ft\/","title":{"rendered":"W0C\/SC-065 (9852) &#8211; 3003 m \/ 9852 ft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>W0C\/SC-065<br \/>\n9852<br \/>\n3003 m \/ 9852 ft<br \/>\nDec 30, 2016<\/p>\n<p>With N0TA John<\/p>\n<p>By KX0R<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listsofjohn.com\/peak\/3306\">9852<\/a> is a pleasant minor summit in the Wet Mountains near Colorado City, southwest of Pueblo.<\/p>\n<p>Key Points:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/psicc\">San Isabel National Forest<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 Near a good road<br \/>\n\u2022 Easy access via a short off-trail hike<br \/>\n\u2022 No marked trail<br \/>\n\u2022 Minor route finding required<br \/>\n\u2022 Nice forested sub-alpine summit<br \/>\n\u2022 Large, easy activation zone<br \/>\n\u2022 Superb HF radio site<br \/>\n\u2022 Limited VHF\/UHF coverage<br \/>\n\u2022 ~ 1.0 mile round-trip<br \/>\n\u2022 ~ 250 vertical feet<\/p>\n<p>Driving access:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Drive to Pueblo, Colorado via I-25<br \/>\n\u2022 Continue south on I-25, and exit west on Greenhorn Highway 165 to Colorado City<br \/>\n\u2022 Drive by Colorado City, and continue west past the town of Rye<br \/>\n\u2022 Stay on 165, and drive northwest on the paved highway into the mountains<br \/>\n\u2022 Climb steadily up to San Isabel and Lake Isabel<br \/>\n\u2022 Continue on up about 3 miles northwest of Lake Isabel<br \/>\n\u2022 Just south of the Greenhill Divide, CR 78, an OK 2WD dirt road, leads off to the east at a marked intersection.<br \/>\n\u2022 Turn right on CR 78 and drive almost 1 mile up along the south side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listsofjohn.com\/peak\/3306\">Peak 9852<\/a> to a modest saddle<br \/>\n\u2022 A gated road leads north into a large quarry<br \/>\n\u2022 Park away from the gate \u2013 this is the \u201ctrailhead\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hike and climb:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Start the hike by walking past the locked gate into the flat quarry<br \/>\n\u2022 Head northwest for about 200 yards to a hidden road<br \/>\n\u2022 Follow the road west up behind the east ridge of 9852<br \/>\n\u2022 Where the road heads northwest, leave the road, and hike up through the woods to the summit ridge<br \/>\n\u2022 Hike west along the forested ridge to the broad summit<br \/>\n\u2022 There\u2019s a cairn with a register jar on top<\/p>\n<p>Additional Details:<\/p>\n<p>9852 can also be climbed more directly up its steep south side from CR 78. However, there\u2019s little good parking except at the gated quarry, and the route described above is easy. We descended down the east ridge, directly to the quarry, with no problem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/SC-065\">9852<\/a> has limited views through the trees. However, it\u2019s a good radio summit. There\u2019s some residential development nearby along Highway 165, but the RF noise level is low. There are good spots to set up, nice trees for holding poles and wires, and even some shelter from wind.
