href=\"http:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/ormes-peak\/185362\">Ormes Peak<\/a> is a relatively accessible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/\">SOTA<\/a> peak located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/psicc\/recarea\/?recid=80379\">Rampart Range<\/a> northwest of Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Key Points:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a driving to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dangerousroads.org\/north-america\/usa\/729-rampart-range-road-usa.html\">Rampart Range Road<\/a> FR 300:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">Colorado Springs Access:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Start at Garden Drive, at the northwest corner of Garden of the Gods Park, north of Highway 24 in Colorado Springs.<br \/>\n\u2022 The bumpy, heavily-used gravel road <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trails.com\/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=XFA110-012\">FR 300<\/a> ascends the range via numerous switchbacks.<br \/>\n\u2022 FR 300 then leads northwest along the Rampart Range.<br \/>\n\u2022 After ascending for several winding miles, the road levels off somewhat.<br \/>\n\u2022 It continues north along the ridge at about 9200 feet.<br \/>\n\u2022 About 1-1\/4 miles north of the turn to Eagle Lake, marked FR 303 heads .northeast at an intersection at about 9320 feet.<br \/>\n\u2022 FR 303 is a good 2WD dirt road.<br \/>\n\u2022 Follow FR 303 for about \u00be mile to a fork.<br \/>\n\u2022 Turn right on FR 302 and follow it southeast toward Ormes Peak.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">Woodland Park Access:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 From Highway 24 at Woodland Park, turn north on Baldwin Street at a stop light at the east side of town.<br \/>\n\u2022 This becomes Road 22 and is called \u201cRampart Range Road\u201d locally.<br \/>\n\u2022 Follow this paved road about 3 miles, northeast and then east, up into a canyon.<br \/>\n\u2022 Loy Creek Road forks off to the right.<br \/>\n\u2022 Follow Loy Creek Road about one mile up to the actual Rampart Range Road <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trails.com\/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=XFA110-012\">FR 300.<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 Turn right, south, on the Rampart Range Road FR 300.<br \/>\n\u2022 Follow FR 300 for about 6 miles, well past the marked road to Rampart Range Reservoir.<br \/>\n\u2022 Marked FR 303 heads northeast at an intersection at about 9320 feet<br \/>\n\u2022 FR 303 is a good 2WD dirt road.<br \/>\n\u2022 Follow FR 303 about \u00be mile to a fork.<br \/>\n\u2022 Turn right on FR 302 and follow it southeast toward Ormes Peak.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style there:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Follow Road 303 and then FR 302 up over a little hill and down a gully toward Ormes Peak, which is visible to the east.<br \/>\n\u2022 If this road is wet or snowy, 4WD may be required. I found a pleasant spot to set up my gear southeast of the peak. It also is fine VHF\/UHF peak \u2013 it has coverage of populated areas in and near Colorado Springs, as well as large areas of the Plains.<\/p>\n<p>Ormes could be combined with other SOTA peaks nearby for a dual activation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/FR-051\">Devils Head W0C\/FR-051<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/FR-087\">Bennett Mountain W0C\/FR-087<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/FR-063\">Mount Herman W0C\/FR-063<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ormes has relatively good access in late spring, summer, and fall. \u00a0It\u2019s easy to climb and activate, and it offers a pleasant summit not visited by many people.
