This is a popular spot; get there early, especially on weekends. There is no fee to park.<\/p>\n<p>Cross Highway 14 and look for a gated dirt road that parallels a ditch. A fee is requested to walk this road into the State Forest. Follow the almost level road for about two miles southeast along the ditch to where it intersects the American Lakes Trail near 10,400 feet elevation. The total time to the summit is about the same with either route.<\/p>\n<p>Note: The \u201cditch route\u201d was closed for construction during the summer of 2016. Incredible views are all around. Most of Rocky Mountain National Park is to the south; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/PR-002\">Mount Richthofen<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nokhu_Crags\">Nokhu Crags<\/a> stand to the west; neighboring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/thunder-mountain-co\/254375\">Thunder Mountain <\/a>is northeast; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/iron-mountain\/152651\">Iron Mountain<\/a> is two miles north; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joeandfrede.com\/colorado\/diamond_peaks\/diamond_peaks.htm?photo=1\">Diamond Peaks<\/a> are about four miles northwest; and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/clark-peak\/151822\"> Clark Peak<\/a> stands high up north in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/arp\/specialplaces\/?cid=fsm91_058256\">Rawah Wilderness.<\/a> The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Park_Range_(Colorado)\">Park Range<\/a> reaches up beyond North Park in the west; Longs Peak is visible far to the southeast. The views enhance the radio operating!<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of space for an HF activation right on top. It was sunny and just breezy when I was there, so I set up at the rock shelter. I guyed my pole to three rocks \u2013 this is sometimes the only good choice on alpine summits. It would be a long day:<\/p>\n<p>Iron Mountain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/PR-061\">W0C\/PR-061<\/a> 2 miles northeast along the ridge<br \/>\nNorth Diamond Peak <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sota.org.uk\/Summit\/W0C\/PR-072\">W0C\/PR-072<\/a> 4 miles northwest, near Cameron Pass<\/p>\n<p>There are many opportunities for camping, backpacking, fishing, and other recreation in the nearby National Forests, the Colorado State Forest, and Rocky Mountain National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Lulu Mountain also is accessible from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/colorado-river\/177441\">Colorado River Trailhead<\/a>, in Rocky Mountain National Park, off Highway 34.
