Thunder Peak or <a title=\"SOTAdata info\" href=\"http:\/\/sotawatch.org\/summits.php?summit=W0C\/FR-150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">W\u00d8C\/FR-15\u00d8<\/a> was the first on the list.The weather forecast was great for the\u00a0<a title=\"Wikipedia entry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estes_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Estes Park<\/a> area and a friend of mine joined me for the hike. We drove into Estes Park and were surprised to see how much snow the mountains got during the week. Dark clouds were hanging in the Mummy Range (Continental Divide). A stiff wind greeted us when we left the car at the trail-head. Light snow-flurries were present for the first part of the hike, even though we had blue skies above us.<\/p>\n<p>Trailhead: 8244 ft \/ 2513 m<br \/>Summit:\u00a0\u00a0 10134 ft \/ 3083 m<br \/>Elev. gain: 2051 ft \/ 625 m<br \/>Roundtrip: 4.5\u00a0 mi \/ 7.2 km<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Summit Comparison\" href=\"http:\/\/schnizer.com\/SOTA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Compare this summit with my other activated summits<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get there:<\/strong><br \/>Take US34 from Loveland towards Estes Park through Big Thompson Canyon. Thunder Peak is on the south-west side of Estes Park. Stay on US34 towards <a>Rocky Mountain NP<\/a>. Go left on County Road 66 (or Tunnel Road), following the signs to the YMCA campus. Follow the road all the way to the end. There is a campground at the very end \u2013 as well as the <em>East Portal of the <a title=\"Wikipedia entry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colorado-Big_Thompson_Project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Thompson Project<\/a> Pipeline<\/em>. The kiosk of the trail-head can be found when you follow the road on the right-side (north) of the reservoir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Red Tape:<\/strong><br \/>At the East Portal of the Adams Tunnel is a small (really small) reservoir \u2013 and the surrounding area is Federal property. You are not supposed to park, fish, boat, pee etc. within 100 yards of the dam \u2013 Homeland security and such. Thunder Peak is within the RMNP, ergo it is a fee area and their rules apply (no dogs etc.) I am not sure about RMNP entry fees\u2026 since the parking lot is outside of the park, I think you are not required to have a NP pass. We continued on the dirt road along <em>Wind River<\/em> (more like a small creek) to a concrete retention pond. About 20 yards before the pond there is a faint trail to the right which continues to follow the creek. It was hard to see on our way up and we missed it. The result was some bush-whacking until we found the trail again. [UPDATE (3\/13\/13): There is now a new sign pointing you into the right direction. You cannot miss it.] On the opposite site of the creek are some nice rock-outcroppings. Right around the horse hitch we left the established Wind River trail and turned towards the drainage between Thunder and Lightning Peak.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1654\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-IMG_4373.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1654\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1654\" title=\"Thunder - Bones\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-IMG_4373-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">See what I found<\/p><\/div>\n<p>First we had to cross the creek which was easy with the current water-level. We kept going along the drainage through lodge-pole pines and areas of aspen groves -always staying on the left (NE) side of the drainage where we encountered more open areas. As a result we made good progress. Interestingly, the soil in the drainage was very soft and sandy &#8211; sometimes we found big piles of sand as if a few kids had destroyed their sand-castle. You can&#8217;t get lost if you stay in the drainage and keep going all the way up to the saddle between Thunder and<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1642\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1642\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1642\" title=\"Thunder Pk - Navigating\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-007-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Where are we?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lightning. From there you can see the summit and head up there. We wanted to shave off some time and took a more direct line to the summit since we were aiming for a second activation. Every now and then I verified our position with the GPS to see whether we were still on the plotted track. Heading up the south-west side was quite a work-out&#8230; it was rather steep (around 30%) and with the soft and sandy soil it felt like climbing sand-dunes. Having enough momentum was sometimes crucial to overcome a section.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Summit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1653\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pano-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1653\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1653\" title=\"Thunder Pk - Summit\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pano-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pano-31.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Pano-31-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the Summit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The views from the summit are spectacular. There are quite a few SOTA peaks right in front of you. To the south are <a title=\"Trip report from Estes Cone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/sota-trip-report\/wofr-o39-estes-cone-%E2%80%93-3348-m-11006-ft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Estes Cone<\/a> (W\u00d8C\/FR-\u00d839), Longs Peak (<a title=\"SOTAdata info\" href=\"http:\/\/sotawatch.org\/summits.php?summit=W0C\/FR-110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">W\u00d8C\/FR-11\u00d8<\/a>) and Mount Meeker; to the East, <a title=\"Lilt Mountain trip-report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/sota-trip-report\/wofr-o50-lily-mtn-%E2%80%93-2977-m-9786-ft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lily Mountain<\/a> (W\u00d8C\/FR-\u00d850), <a title=\"Twin Sisters Peak East trip-report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/sota-trip-report\/wofr-o37-twin-sisters-pk-east-%E2%80%93-11404-ft-3476-m\/http:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twin Sister Peak East<\/a> (W\u00d8C\/FR-\u00d837) and West. To the north we could see <a title=\"Emerald Mountain trip-report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/sota-trip-report\/wfr58-emerald-mountain-2810-9237-ft-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emerald Mountain<\/a> (W\u00d8C\/FR-\u00d858 ) and <a title=\"Eagle Cliff Mountain trip-report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/sota-trip-report\/wfr068-eagle-cliff-mtn-2709-8906-ft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eagle Cliff Mountain<\/a> (W\u00d8C\/FR-\u00d868 ) and finally to the west, the Continental Divide and the Mummy Range with too many SOTA summits to list. The summit was very windy but the skies to the west looked a lot friendlier than earlier in the morning. Setting up the equipment was very efficient due to the fact that I had help and Phil\/NS7P was my second contact after just a few CQs. His spot posted on SOTAwatch attracted the usual chasers within minutes (thanks guys).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Descent:<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1657\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-IMG_4395.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1657\" title=\"Thunder Pk - Running downhills\" src=\"http:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-IMG_4395-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-IMG_4395-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.schnizer.com\/SOTAblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120420-IMG_4395.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben running downhills<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The descent was quite fun&#8230; the soft and sandy soil allowed us to run\/slide downhills towards the saddle and finally turn north into the drainage again, following our ascent route back to the trail-head an car.
